Thursday designated Code Red Air Quality Action Day
The aftermath of Canadian wildfires continues to affect Pennsylvania, as the state’s Department of Environmental Protection declared Thursday, June 29, a Code Red Air Quality Action Day.
Thursday marks the second consecutive action day, as fine particulate matter creates a thick haze throughout the county.
During Code Red conditions, young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis are advised to avoid outdoor activity. All others should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion.
Air quality conditions could potentially reach Code Purple, according to the DEP, which is a level of urgency above Code Red.
During Code Purple conditions, sensitive groups are advised to avoid all outdoor activity.
As of 9 a.m., airnow.gov, the air quality index for the Butler City area is 228, or “very unhealthy.”
The National Weather Service of Pittsburgh also advised drivers to use extreme caution, as the foggy atmosphere could result in low visibility.
Residents are strongly encouraged to help during Air Quality Action Days by avoiding the open burning of leaves and avoiding the use of gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.
Residents can check airnow.gov anytime for the latest air quality index in their area.
