Police: Man killed by officer following pursuit in Indiana County

An officer shot and killed a man who was being pursued late Sunday night, July 2 , in Indiana County, state police said in a Tuesday news release.

The driver fled when a state police trooper in a marked patrol unit attempted to conduct a traffic stop at around 11:55 p.m. in the area of Yankeetown Avenue and Lockard Avenue Extension in Center Township, Indiana County, state police said.

The trooper pursued the car, being driven by an adult male who was determined to be the sole occupant of the fleeing vehicle, the news release said.

The pursuit continued for several miles on various roadways in Center Township and Homer City, and troopers deployed hollow spike strips trying to bring the fleeing vehicle to a safe stop; but the suspect continued to flee in the vehicle, police said.

During an encounter with the driver in the southbound lane on Route 119 near Tide Road in Center Township, Indiana County, the trooper shot at the male driver of Route 119, and he was struck, a news release said.

Troopers rendered aid to the victim, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, police said.

The identity of the suspect is currently being withheld pending next-of-kin notifications, police said.

The Troop A Major Case Team, the Indiana County District Attorney’s Office and the Indiana County Coroner’s Office are investigating this incident and additional information will be released as appropriate, police said.
