New signs under discussion at Evans City

EVANS CITY — The bulk of the discussion at the Evans City council meeting on Wednesday evening, July 3, was about signage of all kinds.

The first one is a new stop sign at the intersection of Primrose Alley and Harmony Alley, an intersection which houses the Evans City Senior Center, BHD Auctions, and an antique shop.

According to council president Cheri Deener, the intersection is a speed hazard as it stands now.

“There’s dead spots where you can’t see, unless you stop dead,” Deener said. “People will just drive right through, and there’s just a high propensity of having a crash. So we’re going to stop that.”

Two stop signs will be placed: one for southbound travelers, and one for northbound travelers. The new stop signs were approved without a vote.

Second, students from the Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School have been brought on to help design new welcome signs for Evans City. There are two welcome signs dotted around town — one on the old school property, and the other located near Skander Tire Service.

However, according to Deener, both the signs are decades old, worn from age, and in need of a replacement. A recent windstorm blew some boards off the sign located near the tire shop.

"What we’re going to do is change it so that it’s an up-and-coming kind of welcome to Evans City,“ Deener said.

Deener is hoping that the graphic arts students from Butler vo-tech can create something that signifies what makes Evans City special. One council member floated the idea of prominently featuring butterflies, in honor of the new butterfly garden at EDCO Park.

According to Deener, the new signs would be placed at the same locations as the current signs.

Plans are still in the very early stages, and it is still unknown whether vo-tech students would just be designing the signs or whether they would play an active role in building them.
