Mars looking to honor veterans with banners
MARS — As part of an initiative to make downtown more visually appealing, Borough Council is looking into hanging military banners on its streets to honor those who have served.
“When the whole discussion began about bringing color to downtown or fixing downtown, a lot of people had asked about the military banners that are in all the surrounding communities,” Amy Brown, assistant secretary and treasurer, told council Monday, July 10.
The proposed program would allow residents to sponsor banners of service members that likely would be displayed between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The banners would then be given back to the sponsors.
The program would be done in conjunction with the Mars Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Banner size and the messages that would be displayed on the vinyl patriotic posters are yet to be determined.
“That’s the nice thing; the whole thing is customizable,” Brown said.
The cost is not finalized yet either, but likely will be between $70 and $100, Brown said.
The committee could act on adopting the program as soon as its next meeting on July 24.
