ZELIENOPLE — Zelienople’s streetscape project resumed Monday, July 10, with efforts to continue to move electrical wires underground along Main Street between Spring and Beaver streets.

“There’s only about five buildings, and we’ve started doing that,” council president Mary Hess said after Monday’s meeting. “It’s not going to disrupt service at all, [and] it’s not going to cause any problems, especially [during] Horse Trading Days.”

Phase two of the ongoing Main Street Revitalization project was estimated to be completed this year, but due to supply chain disruptions, the end date is not clear, the borough’s website says. This portion of the project has been in progress since before the fall 2021.

According to Hess, the only date they have been given on when to expect the transformers they ordered for the streetscape project is ‘sometime during 2024.’

The council also on Monday approved applying for funding from and sending a letter of commitment to join the Multi-Municipal Safety Action Plan called ‘Safe Streets and Roads For All.’

Zelienople will join Cranberry, Harmony and Jackson Township in hopes of being awarded grant money to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists on Zelienople roadways.

“We are trying to make it a little more accessible so if people want to ride their bikes from Jackson Township into town,” Hess said. “It also mitigates traffic and connects our communities. We have some outlying little developments that have come in and we’re trying to create some accessibility into town so people can take trails and ride their bikes into town as opposed to driving cars.”

According to borough manager Andrew Spencer, the letter of commitment was due at 5 p.m. on Monday night, before the council meeting was held. It was passed unanimously and was to be emailed directly after the meeting.

The planning grant is through the US Department of Transportation and “will require a local match from each of the municipalities” of around $5,500, according to Spencer.

Hess said the planning grant won’t be awarded until December 2023.

After that, if awarded, there will be a planning phase where they will assess the area and determine what work needs to be done to better pedestrian and cyclist accessibility.

Fishers Bar and Grill on Main Street is holding two events this month, with Fishers Cornhole Fundraiser on July 15 and Fishers Zelie Idol from July 20 through July 22. Both events will be in the back of the building and will be set up in the Town Center Lot at the intersection of West New Castle Street and South Clay Street.

Glade Run Lutheran Services will hold its annual Family Food Truck Festival on Aug. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s trucks include Mission Maui, Let’s Taco, NatuRoll Creamery and many more food options.

Additionally, there will be alcohol, a car cruise, music and more. Admission is free.

On Aug. 27, the Harmony Fire District Brotherhood Memorial Ride will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Zelienople Community Park at shelter #2. This is an annual event that started in 2010 in honor of three young firefighters who died, Sam Bucci, Elijah Lunsford and honorary member Trevor Barkley.

According to council vice president Drew Mathew, all money raised is given to a local group in need, such as a fire department or other first responders.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, Boy Scout Troop #457 will hold its Annual Chicken BBQ Fundraiser at 4 Corners Park, as they have done for more than a decade.

Funds raised will be used for future leadership classes and events as well as funding a new equipment trailer and camping supplies.

Tickets are $15 online and $17 the day of. Dinners will include half of a BBQ chicken, a dinner roll, corn on the cob, roasted potatoes, a drink and a cookie.
