Butler Area School District ups pay for substitute teachers

BUTLER TWP — The Butler Area school board voted to raise the pay for substitute teachers through Educational Staffing Solutions to a total of $105 a day on Monday, July 18.

The increase amounts to $5 per day, board member Al Vavro said.

According to the district’s non-contractual compensation report, the pay per day for substitute teachers had been $100 since 2019.

When asked by a board member about where Butler’s rates for substitute teachers stand, superintendent Brian White said the district’s rates put them “in the lower half of the county” compared to those of surrounding districts.

White said the district’s substitute teaching rate is nearly 24% less than in Slippery Rock and about 43% less than in Seneca Valley.

In 2021, the Slippery Rock Area School District raised its daily substitute teaching rate from $100 to $130, with a stipulation that the pay would be raised to $150 per day if the substitute teacher works more than 30 days in the district.

In 2022, Seneca Valley School District raised the daily pay for substitute teachers by $25 a day to a daily rate of $150.
