Summertime decisions affect your health; enjoy the season in moderation

As we continue into late July and early August, you’ll find our summertime version of the health tab included in today’s print edition of the Butler Eagle.

The purpose of the health tab is to highlight healthy habits, note health care trends and cover potential health care issues.

Following the slew of air quality alerts issued over the past few weeks, we opted this summer to highlight the impact of that, speaking with some area health care providers.

Over the past few weeks, Butler County has been placed under a number of Code Orange and Code Red air quality action days.

The alerts issued by the state Department of Environmental Protection urge people to stay inside. Code Red indicates unhealthy air quality that may impact the general public, and Code Orange indicates unhealthy air quality for sensitive populations, including elderly and those with asthma.

We also spoke with people about how swimming can be a healthy, fun activity. One mother shared her approach to keeping her children safe at the pool or water park.

With warm temperatures it’s tempting to spend more time outside, but what we learned was that all good things should be enjoyed in moderation.

Children may get too tired at the pool if they stay for more than an hour.

When air quality is poor, especially at level red, its not good practice to be outside.

We hope you’ll page through this special section to read these and other stories about healthy living in Butler County.
