Farm Show honors history with new book

‘It started with a plow’

As a way to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Butler Farm Show, the show’s historical committee has published “The Butler Farm Show — It Began with a Plow and Grew Into a Family Tradition” as a historical retelling of the farm show’s generational history.

The book is for sale for $20 and proceeds will go to historical project for the farm show.

“It’s a coffee-table book,” Ken Metrick, secretary of the Butler Farm Show, said of the publication, printed on semi-gloss paper.

“It’s a high-quality book that starts back at 1948 up through today. There was a lot of research in the book that highlights what the farm show stands for.”

The nearly 60-page book takes readers on a chronological historical retelling of the farm show and the generations that have contributed to the annual event. The book further emphasizes the retelling through pictures.

“We put in a lot of pictures,” Metrick said. “A lot of older pictures, a lot of pictures that people haven’t been able to see until now.”

For nearly four years, Metrick and his committee worked on research and collecting photos before sending it off for publication. With over 370 files to work with, the challenge came with what not to include in the history book.

“I wanted it to be accurate,” Metrick said. “I didn’t want to leave anything out.”

“The Butler Farm Show — It Began with a Plow and Grew Into a Family Tradition” emphasizes the hard work that families have put into the farm show throughout the generations.

“It was emotional, looking at the pictures,” Metrick said. “I learned an awful lot, and I’ve been around the farm show all my life. It gave me a new understanding of what the farm show is.”

Along with the book, additional 75th anniversary memorabilia, such as mugs and limited-edition hats, will be on sale, with proceeds going to help fund additional historical projects for the farm show and the junior committee.
