Girl Scouts refresh signs at Mars Area schools
ADAMS TWP — When students at Mars Area Primary Center and Mars Area Elementary School show up for the first day of class later this month, they’ll notice a very important change the second they arrive in front of their buildings.
As of Sunday, Aug. 13, the signs welcoming passersby to the schools have been given a fresh coat of paint, courtesy of the Mars Girl Scouts service unit.
“We have open building visitation on Thursday, and the first day of school's Aug. 23,” said Scout leader Megan Lenz. “We wanted the signs to look nice when everyone got here.”
There were three signs that needed repainting: one in front of the primary center, one in front of the elementary school, and one facing Route 228 beckoning visitors to both schools. All three were in need of repainting, and the Girl Scouts also took care to beautify the mulch beds under each sign.
“We’re also going to de-weed the flower beds, and we're also going to plant some fresh flowers under the sign,” said Jennifer Bainbridge, Scout leader. “We’re going to clean everything up and make it look really nice and pretty for the first day of school, and hopefully this lasts for a long time.”
The sign in front of the primary center was the first one to receive treatment, being coated in white primer around 10 a.m. — four hours before most of the volunteers arrived.
After the application of primer, all three signs were covered with a fresh coat of yellow and blue, the official colors of the school district, along with white outlines.
Lenz, said the Scouts are repainting the signs without charge to the school district, with the paintbrushes, paint and other supplies being donated by parents.
“We all just kind of donated some different things, like the flowers, and it's free of cost to the school district for us to do this,” Lenz said.
