Biggleswade 4 amazed at American sandwiches

Four teenagers from Biggleswade, England, spent part of their summer in Butler County in 1970, and took time out of their busy schedules Aug. 17 to speak with Hassell Sledd, of Slippery Rock. Three Janes and a Tom came from Biggleswade, England, to Butler County in August, 1970, on a sightseeing trip sponsored by the Pittsburgh Rotary District 730 and three Slippery Rock families who were helped by the British in previous trips overseas.

Jane Ball, Jane Denny, Jane Diemer and Tom Armstrong spent about a month living in Slippery Rock and visiting some local areas and some national sights during their stay, including a visit to Washington, D.C.

While they enjoyed swimming at Moraine State Park and riding a boat on Lake Arthur, the Brits were sad to witness a car crash. The families they stayed with, the Marsdens, Pattersons and Barrons helped the victims in the crash.

The four British students were also particularly amazed at the makeup of American sandwiches, which differed from that of their own country’s because they have “everything in them.”
