The suspect involved in an active shooting situation that spanned several hours in Pittburgh’s Garfield neighborhood is dead, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.

The suspect was pronounced deceased by Pittsburgh EMS at 5:08 p.m. Wednesday, Pittsburgh Public Safety said late Friday afternoon in a post to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The active shooter situation in Pittsburgh caused residences to be evacuated Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 23, according to officials.

People were warned at 11:01 a.m. to avoid the 4800 block of Broad and North Mathilda Streets in the Garfield neighborhood due to the situation, Pittsburgh Public Safety said.

According to reports from KDKA, shots were fired when Allegheny County sheriffs deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice at home in the area. A man was illegally occupying the home after it had recently been bought during a sheriff’s sale.

Shots were still being fired at 11:23 a.m., according to a later post by Pittsburgh Public Safety.

Just after noon, officers said they would evacuate homes in the 4800 block of Broad Street. Anyone in the neighborhood who was inside their home was instructed to dial 911 and identify their location.

UPMC Children’s Hospital, which is half a mile from the shooting situation, released a statement saying additional security would be present throughout the day.

“The individual is accounted for and there is no direct threat to patients, staff, or visitors,” the statement read.

At 2:30 p.m., Pittsburgh officials decided to postpone the City in the Streets event due to the situation, according to a post on X.

State police in Troop B are expected to take control of the investigation.
