Friends of the Library having an extra book sale
Susan Fletcher enjoys reading mystery stories, but the only mystery she tried to solve Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 22, was how many books she could fit into the bags she brought to the Friends of the Library book sale in the Butler Area Public Library.
Maggie Souzer, president of the friends organization, said the group normally hosts two book sales a year — one in the spring and one in the fall — but the organization received so many donations this year that its members planned an “emergency sale” this week.
Fletcher didn’t take issue with the spontaneity of the sale.
“If there is a book sale anywhere, I’m there,” Fletcher said.
The sale runs through Thursday in the library’s basement, and Souzer said thousands of books and other materials, such as puzzles and DVDs, are available.
Cardboard boxes filled with books crowded rows and rows of tables in the basement Tuesday, and as shoppers moved books from the boxes to their bags, members of the friends group quickly refilled the boxes.
Joe Saworn, of Butler, took his time looking through the boxes in almost every row.
“It’s addicting,” Saworn said.
Mary Chris Falbow, secretary of the Friends of the Library, said the organization donates all of the money it makes to the Butler Area Public Library, which helps support the library and its patrons.
“We give about $1,500 a year to the library,” Falbow said. “We always supplement the summer reading program.”
The library’s basement will be open for the sale from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and Souzer said people can get a bag’s worth of books on Thursday for just $5.
