Mercer Township addresses nearly $40,000 in delinquent sewage bills

MERCER TWP — Township supervisors at their meeting Monday, Aug. 21, discussed how to approach collecting nearly $40,000 in delinquent sewage bills.

Supervisors said $39,350 is owed by a number of accounts that are more than six months behind in payments.

“If all the residents don’t contribute, the monthly fee could possibly have to increase. We are not looking at that right now, but somebody has to pay the bills,” said John Benett Jr., chairman of the township supervisors.

Supervisors discussed 16 sewage delinquencies. According to supervisors, 14 properties are delinquent by five months or more. Two properties are only three to four months in arrears.

As part of the collection process, the township solicitor will issue letters to residents outlining the next steps. Property liens can be part of this process if delinquencies are not resolved.

Additionally, supervisors reported that seven incomplete sewage connections/inspections are anticipated to be resolved in the near future.

Supervisors also approved signing the updated memorandum of understanding regarding the Kozy Rest campground sewer expansion. The township is awaiting reimbursement for legal and engineering fees.

Other business

The estimated delivery time for the new municipal dump truck is January. Benett said he is investigating a state grant that helps with the funding for equipment purchases.

The township is seeking to fill the position of code enforcement officer, and a “well-qualified” candidate is under consideration, according to Benett.

A resolution to pay overtime after eight hours per shift in addition to overtime after 40 hours per week for township-hired positions is under consideration.

The township purchased and erected a traffic sign, “Reduced Speed Ahead 35 MPH,“ as requested by the Harrisville Police Department. It is to be placed on southbound Route 8, north of Centertown Road.

Supervisors reported eight building permits have been issued in 2023: three demolitions, one deck, two additions, one mobile home and one garage.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 at the township office, 4629 William Flynn Highway.
