Giant Eagle on Tuesday, Aug. 29, elevated Bill Artman to chief executive officer, a role he had filled in an interim capacity since March.

Artman, who has been with the regional grocer for almost 40 years, became interim CEO following the departure of longtime CEO Laura Karet on March 21.

“I’m humbled and honored by the opportunity to lead the company that I’ve been a part of almost four decades, while working alongside thousands of exceptional and talented team members,” Artman said in a news release Tuesday.

During his time with Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle, Artman has served as president of supermarkets, executive vice president and senior vice president of retail operations.

“Bill already has made a tremendous impact in his interim role, giving the board confidence that he is the right leader to take Giant Eagle to new heights. We are pleased to officially welcome him as CEO,” said Bart Friedman, chairman of the company’s board of directors.

Artman’s promotion sets in motion several other executive shifts at Giant Eagle, such as Terri Micklin who has been promoted to executive vice president of GetGo, and Jim Tsipakis, who has been promoted to executive vice president of supermarkets and pharmacy.
