The all-female Boy Scout Troop 683, based in Cabot, is closer to the brand-new trailer they’ve been looking for.

Over the weekend, Troop 683 held a combined rummage sale and barbecue outside the American Legion Post 683 on North Pike Road. The proceeds from the sale will go toward purchasing a new trailer for the troop to haul camping supplies.

On both Saturday and Sunday afternoon, the Boy Scout troop offered “lightly-used” goods such as housewares, clothes and books, all of which were donated by residents of Butler and Allegheny counties. Troop committee leader Linda Lauer secured donations from Butler County, while scoutmaster Amy Yurocko did the same for Allegheny County, where she lives.

“My son belongs to a Boy Scout troop in Allegheny County,” said Yurocko, whose daughter is in the troop. “When a girl troop was starting, we found the girl troop she’s in and we joined that one, because we couldn’t find one in our area. It’s just location.”

The food was provided by Drew-B-Que Barbecue, which sold pulled pork sandwiches, loaded nachos and other dishes.

Formed in 2019, Boy Scout Troop 683’s all-female troop has seven full-time members. The Boy Scouts program — now officially known as Scouts BSA — has allowed females since 2019.

This marked the second bit of fundraising activity by Troop 683 in the span of a week. On Tuesday, Aug. 22, the troop sold pulled pork sandwiches at the Knoch School District’s open house event at Knoch Stadium.

According to Lauer, the trailer currently used by the troop was built by hand by the father of one of the scouts, to make it easier for the girls to haul their gear through the woods when they went camping this June.

“It's an old wooden trailer that he threw a truck cap on,” Lauer said. “He actually built it so we could go to camp with it this past June. If he wouldn't have done it, the girls would have to haul all of their gear back into the woods. So it makes it a lot easier on the girls.”

Lauer said the troop needs to raise approximately $4,000 to buy the model of trailer they need. After the Knoch open house and the two-day rummage sale, they are nearly halfway to the goal.

Troop 683 meets at 7 p.m. Mondays throughout the school year at the American Legion post, except on days when there is no school.
