Keystone Safari giraffe named
The giraffe calf at Keystone Safari went more than a week without a name, but since the name, Keyari, was shared on Facebook, many have already taken to social media to express support of it.
Keystone Safari announced the name Tuesday, Sept. 5 on its Facebook page after a naming contest.
Keyari was born at about 8 a.m. Aug. 26 to famous local giraffes Levi and Blue Jeans, who welcomed the calf at 6 foot, 3 inches tall and 164 pounds.
In the contest, people could comment one name suggestion for the calf, where they could also write a short reason why they chose the name. The winner was chosen by votes cast by the people most familiar with the giraffe family at the safari, which included several animal care staff members.
The name is a combination of keystone and safari
Levi was named after an Amish builder and friend that helped build Levi’s home at Living Treasures, where he lived prior to Keystone Safari. Many people relate his name to Levi Strauss brand jean clothing, according to a Facebook post by Keystone Safari.
Blue Jean's name started as a nickname, and following a contest for her name in 2012 as a calf, Keystone Safari supported keeping the name, the post said.
