Electrical fire prompts response to unoccupied Butler home Wednesday

A fire Wednesday, Sept. 6, damaged an unoccupied city home that is listed for sale.

According to officials, no one was inside the home when an electrical fire started in the basement of 213 Heim Ave.

The fire was reported by Butler County dispatchers at 10:18 a.m. Wednesday.

Chris Switala, chief of Butler City Bureau of Fire, said it started in the basement.

“An electrical panel was popping and arching. Most of the fire was knocked down in the first 15 minutes. We kept it contained until the power company was on the scene,” he said.

Crews fought the blaze for a total 45 minutes as it spread through the walls to the first and second floors, Switala said.

No one was injured as a result of of the fire, and Switala was unsure how long it had been unoccupied.

Departments began clearing the scene around 11:30 a.m.

The property has been listed for sale since June, according to the website Zillow, is under contract through Re/Max Select Realty. The asking price was set at $50,000.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home was built in 1900. It is described in the listing as a “great opportunity.”

“Situated on a corner lot, this home provides great outdoor space... Needs some TLC.”

Butler Township Volunteer Fire District, VA Butler Healthcare Fire Department, Butler Ambulance Service and Butler City police all responded to the scene. Herman Volunteer Fire Company was also on stand-by for the departments responding to the fire.
