Car show raises money for Pullman Park, Mason Martin
Playing for the Rodfathers of Butler on Saturday, an all-star line up of vintage cars and hot rods were stationed in the outfield at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park.
The Rodfathers’ second annual Field of Dreams Car Cruise was a fundraiser for the ballpark, and one of the vendors, Krazy Kreations Embroidery of Butler, donated $10 from each sale to the family of Mason Martin to help him recover from injuries he suffered while playing in Karns City Area Jr./Sr. High School’s season opening football game on Sept. 1.
Martin, who was playing quarterback, suffered a head injury and a collapsed lung during the game.
The Field of Dreams Car Cruise is the first of three car shows the Rodfathers have planned at the park, said Brittany Undercuffler of the Rodfathers.
A Halloween-themed craft show is scheduled for Oct. 15 and “Trunk or Treat” is set for Oct. 22. During Trunk or Treat, children will be invited to wear costumes and visit cars with decorated trunks to get treats, Undercuffler said.
Providing a place for people to display the cars and trucks they love while raising money for maintenance and improvements at the park is the goal of all of the car shows, she said.
Brothers Thomas and George Kosht of Chicora brought a 1958 Plymouth Belvedere and a 1957 Plymouth Savoy that Thomas owns to the show.
“It was sitting in a field in Alabama when I bought it,” Thomas said of the Belvedere, which he has owned for 13 years. He said he did some body and engine work and installed power brakes on the car.
“I drive it a lot. I take it to all the shows around here,” Thomas said. “If it gets a stone chip, I don’t have a heart attack.”
The car features flashy tail fins and a push-button operated automatic transmission.
“Everything works except the electric clock,” Thomas said.
The unrestored car has a flathead eight-cylinder engine under the hood and a column-shifted “three on the tree” manual transmission.
