Vernon Harry Boyer, 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, surrounded by family at Good Samaritan Hospice House, Wexford.
He was born Aug. 19, 1933, in Cowanshannock Township, Armstrong County, the son to the late Carl Edison Boyer and Florence Hazel Ramer Boyer. Vern graduated from Shannock Valley High School in 1951. He married Margaret Jean “Margie” McCoy on April 4, 1953.
Vern was a U.S. Army veteran with active service from 1953 to 1955. Vern worked as a carpenter’s helper at Rural Valley Contracting in Rural Valley. He later became a building materials salesperson at Henry Shaffer Lumber Company in Kittanning and later did the same task after moving to Slippery Rock in 1974 and working for McGowan Lumber Company and Panel & Tile Mart in Butler. He then worked for 20 years as a maintenance supervisor at Camp Crestfield in Slippery Rock until his retirement in 2003. Vern assisted at two different funeral homes during his career, which included Edwards Funeral Home in Rural Valley and later Smith Funeral Home in Slippery Rock. He also worked at Slippery Rock Hardware as a retail salesperson from 2017 to present. He was most proud of his accomplishments as a gifted woodworker.
Faith and church have always been an important part of his and Margie’s life. They were members of Highland Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock from 1974 to 2021. They later became members of Center Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock in 2021.
Together through the years, Vern and Margie were active supporting church missions and participated in several mission trips to Alaska, Kentucky, Louisiana and Arizona.
