A back-to-school celebration at Emily Brittain Elementary School turned into what some teachers would call Christmas on Aug. 24, when No. 1 Cochran funneled $10,000 to the school through Adopt A Classroom.

Josh Hundertmark, principal of Emily Brittain Elementary School, said the donation allows the school to provide additional learning materials to students that enhance their education.

“They love seeing the boxes come in, it's like Christmas for them,” Hundertmark said of the teachers’ reactions to the donation. “What teachers have received and purchased are larger classroom rugs, little reading stations; some have purchased literacy games — things that just enhance the classroom and make their learning experience better.”

The donation was made as part of Subaru Loves Learning, a national initiative by Subaru of America, which provides funding for teachers at high-needs schools across the country, according to a news release from No. 1 Cochran.

Hundertmark said Adopt A Classroom gathers donations for schools and money can be given to individual teachers. He said the agency helps fund supplemental classroom supplies that teachers may not be able to get with their annual budgets.

According to Hundertmark, the teachers at Emily Brittain were elated to receive the donation, mostly because it would help their students.

“We provide supplies and things for students, but teachers are always looking for ways to further support them,” Hundertmark said. “We truly are grateful for their support.”
