Incident at St. Conrad resolved, diocese grateful

Police responded to St. Conrad Roman Catholic Church on Buttercup Road in Butler Township for a mental health situation involving weapons Tuesday, Sept. 12, according to officials.

John Hays, chief of Butler Township police, said officers were dispatched around 5:08 a.m. for a welfare check at the parish house.

Police said the incident involved a mental health issue and weapons, but no shots were fired and the matter was resolved peacefully.

Several guns were removed from the residence as part of the investigation, according to documents, and the man was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh released a statement Tuesday, saying the welfare check was for a priest who had been on a leave of absence for health reasons.

The priest has been dealing with an ongoing medical condition, according to the statement.

“We are grateful that police were able to help to transport the priest by ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation and continued treatment,” the statement read. “We are praying for him, and for police and public safety professionals who provided such great service this morning.”

As the incident is mental health related, police said they will not be releasing further information.
