Jeanne McGuire-Conlon
Jeanne Anne McGuire-Conlon, 75, of Slippery Rock, passed away at her residence on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023, from complications of dementia with possible Lewy bodies.
Jeanne was born in Manhattan, N.Y., on Sept. 9, 1948, to Captain Francis Hugh McGuire, NYPD, and Captain Gladys Katherine Chaab McGuire, U.S. Women's Army Corps. She married Michael Peter Conlon, on Dec. 30, 1972. She was a loving daughter, wife and mother, and an avid teacher and Girl Scout.
She and Mike moved to Slippery Rock in 1995 and enjoyed their fellowship with their university family, St. Faustina Parish family and the community.
She graduated from Our Lady Help of Christians School and St. Saviour High School, both in Brooklyn, N.Y. She graduated from Stony Brook University, SUNY, with a Bachelor of Science in biology and psychology, and a Master of Arts in liberal studies, attended graduate school at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and graduated from Hofstra University with a Master of Science in counseling and a Certificate of Advanced Study in family therapy.
She worked at Holy Trinity High School, Hicksville, N.Y., as a biology teacher, and later at Potsdam College of SUNY as a biology instructor.
Subsequently she was a professor at Wadhams Hall Seminary College in Ogdensburg, N.Y. and at Butler County Community College. At BC3 she taught anatomy and physiology, among other life science courses, and also worked in the tutoring lab until her retirement about 2015.
She was dedicated to Girl Scouts. As a girl she earned the Curved Bar, the highest award in Girl Scouting at the time. As an adult, she led troops in Westbury, N.Y., Potsdam, N.Y., and Slippery Rock, receiving various awards including Outstanding Volunteer, Thanks Badge, Thanks Plus, and the Parent of a Gold Award Scout pin. She served as a mentor and role model for many girls. She was a lifetime member of Girl Scouting.
Survivors include her husband Michael at home; sons, Sean Michael Conlon, of Slippery Rock and Francis Colagrande Conlon, of North Versailles, Pa.; daughters, Shannon Rose McGuire Conlon and husband, Mark, of Alexandria, Va. and Kayla Ann Conlon-Colagrande of Petersburg, Ohio; sister, Elizabeth McGuire Porto and husband, Dr. Manuel Porto, of Villa Park, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
MCGUIRE-CONLON — A Mass of the Resurrection for Jeanne Anne McGuire-Conlon, who died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Faustina Parish, St. Peter Church, 670 South Main St., Slippery Rock.
The Mass will be followed by a dinner and celebration of her life in the church basement. Interment will be later at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Memorial contributions may be given to your local Girl Scout organization, or you may arrange for Masses to be said for the repose of her soul at any Catholic church.
