Supply chain strikes Zelie revitalization project again
ZELIENOPLE — Continued supply chain issues have left the second phase of Zelienople’s Main Street Revitalization Project waiting on a lone transformer.
“We are still waiting on one transformer, and we plan on getting even more so we can complete the project,” council president Mary Hess said at the borough’s council meeting Monday, Sept. 25.
As the revitalization project works to move Main Street’s utilities underground, construction on phase two — spanning Spring Street to Beaver Street — has been halted since May waiting on a delivery of transformers and electrical components.
According to public works director Chad Garland, three transformers have arrived and one is on the way. Construction resumed on the project in late July.
The final transformer is expected to arrive in March 2024, according to Hess, but that could be subject to change.
Having completed phase one of the revitalization effort, from the New Castle Street intersection to Spring Street, phase two was estimated to be completed this year.
The continued supply chain disruptions have made a completion date for phase two — which has been in progress since before fall 2021 — uncertain.
Council has also begun considering bids for the estimated $182,800 stormwater improvement project along Main Street.
This project will extend storm sewers from 424 S. Main St. along Culvert and Clay streets, adding capacity to the existing system.
In January, Zelienople received $113,610 in Municipal Infrastructure Program grant funds for the project, with a match requirement of $69,189.
Council approved applications Monday for fall and winter events throughout the borough.
