Woman photographs bald eagle along road in Jefferson Township

Michelle Sleigher photographed this bald eagle along Victory Road in Jefferson Township on Monday, Sept. 25. Submitted photo

Michelle Sleigher came within a few feet from a bald eagle on Victory Road in Jefferson Township on Monday morning, Sept. 25.

Sleigher, of Jefferson Township, was on her way home from work at the ALDI Distribution Center in Clinton Township when she spotted the bird standing on the road ahead.

“It’s something you don’t see all the time, so when you do, it makes you stop and forget all the bad things going on in the world,” Sleigher said.

She slowed and took a photo from a distance, assuming the bird would fly away before she drove closer.

She said she was surprised the eagle didn’t fly off as her vehicle approached. Instead, the bird maintained its position, allowing Sleigher to stop about 3 feet from it.

Sleigher rolled down her vehicle’s window and snapped another picture.

“I couldn’t believe it; it stayed right there,” she said. “It stopped, and it posed.”

Sleigher said she has seen bald eagles before, but never so close.

“I didn’t even have to zoom in,” she said.
