Knoch game at Shady Side canceled

Knoch High School's varsity football game at Shady Side Academy, scheduled for Friday night, has been canceled after officials said hand, foot and mouth disease was detected in the Shady Side football locker room.

Knoch coach Tim Burchett said while medical personnel gave Shady Side clearance to play the game, the school opted not to play and accepted a forfeit loss.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, hand, foot and mouth disease is a rash that is commonly found on the hands and feet. Symptoms usually include fever, mouth sores and skin rash, the CDC said.

Knoch receives a forfeit victory, and its record is now 6-1 on the season, 2-0 in conference play.
