Moniteau succumbs to powerful Wildcats

CHERRY TWP — All three phases of the game were clicking for Central Clarion football (7-0) Friday night as the Wildcats defeated Moniteau (1-6) 70-6 at Luciano Plesakov Stadium.

Central Clarion finished up its back-to-back stints in Butler County, after defeating Karns City last Friday 50-15.

Despite the 64-point victory, Central Clarion coach Dave Eggleton was still looking for more from his team.

“What’s getting me are the plays we didn’t make tonight,” Eggleton said. “We had a few dropped balls that could have been costly going forward. We got to get on the film and then make those plays. If a ball hits a guy in the hand, he has got to catch it.”

Special teams got the Wildcats on the board first as Dawson Smail returned a punt 30-yards after a quick Warrior three and out just over two minutes into the contest.

On Central Clarion’s first offensive drive, Smail scored the next Wildcat points with a 30-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Jase Ferguson.

Ferguson would end the day with four touchdown passes for 187 yards and no interceptions.

Eggleton said he was pleased with his quarterback’s performance, but there is one area he hopes to help him improve on.

“Sometimes (Ferguson) want to hit the home run ball,” Eggleton said. “Just got to go to the check down guy and know that he’s there and finding it when he needs to. He likes to extend plays sometimes and that is what he is great at. It’s kind of a double-edged sword and you don’t want to take that away from him.”

The Warriors had a hard time moving the ball against a big Wildcat front. Quarterback Brendin Sankey was the only Moniteau player able to find some running space, but it usually came when he was looking for a receiver that was not open.

Central Clarion took a 56-point lead into halftime after a throwing display from Ferguson.

“The message was to forget about the first half,” Moniteau coach Bob Rottman said. “Come out, continue to fight, let the pride kick in and let’s win the second half.”

In the third quarter the Wildcats kept the scoring going with a 5-yard touchdown run by Noah Naser.

Moniteau would answer with it’s only score of the game off an 8-yard touchdown pass from Sankey to Jesse Kohlmeyer.

Sankey lead the Warriors in rushing yards with 56 yards on nine attempts, while Brock Beachem lead the team in receiving yards with 83 on two catches.

Up next the Warriors will face off against Punxsutawney and in the search for their second win of the season.

“I know (Punxsutawney) is going to be big upfront,” Rottman said. “They are going to run the ball so we’ll deal with them and adjust as they come. I know they are a good football team so we have our work cut out for us.”
