Injured Karns City Gremlins quarterback Mason Martin may soon be transferred from UPMC Presbyterian Hospital to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh to begin rehabilitation.

Mason’s father, Denny Martin, shared the update on his son’s condition on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 10, via Facebook.

“He was scheduled to be transferred to Mercy Hospital this week to begin his rehabilitation, but that was pushed back until next week due to bed availability at Mercy,” Martin said.

Mason collapsed during the third quarter of a Karns City home football game Sept. 1 and has remained in the Pittsburgh-area hospital with serious injuries. He has yet to regain full consciousness.

Martin said in the update that Mason responded physically to a command for the first time Monday.

“The rehabilitation team was in yesterday, and they were able to get him to squeeze their hands on command,” Martin wrote.

Mason remains unconscious, but will open his eyes about halfway and blink a few times, the teen’s father said.

“He’s trying to open his eyes; they just won’t open all the way yet,” Martin said.

Martin said one of Mason’s doctors has expressed confidence in his ability to recover from his near-fatal injury.

“She said he is off the charts with regards to what they typically see. She remains confident in his ability to recover, but we just need to be patient,” he said.

The post ended with a thank you to the community.

“We can’t express enough how thankful we are for all the support,” Martin said. “Despite the hardships our family is facing, we continue to feel blessed every day. Please continue to pray and believe.”
