Rare hole-in-one at Aubrey’s
BUTLER TWP — Paul Sybert said he never saw another shot like it.
The Butler man was golfing with Beaver resident Mark Drear when the latter shot a hole-in-one on the 310-yard, par-4 No. 7 hole on Monday at Aubrey’s Dubbs Dred.
“I’ve been golfing for 10 years or so and I’ve seen holes-in-one on par-3 holes,” Sybert said. “I’ve never seen one on a par-4 before.”
Drear became the sixth golfer since 2009 to ace No. 7 at Aubrey’s. The hole begins uphill, then slopes down to the hole. It is a straight shot, but the flag is not in view from the tee box.
John Aubrey Jr. aced that hole in 2009. Sam Beck did so in 2011, Jonathan Fair in 2016, Justin Tonini and Christian Werner in 2021.
“This is the first time I’ve ever played Aubrey’s,” Drear said. “I had no idea where to aim my ball on that hole. Paul pointed to a tree among the woods behind the green and told me to aim for that.
“I knew I hit it straight, but you lose sight of it. We had no idea where the ball went.”
Sybert and Drear spent 10 minutes looking for the ball before Drear decided to drop one behind the green.
“There’s a slope behind the green and we figured the ball rolled down into the woods somewhere,” Drear said.
Sybert chipped his ball onto the green and went to pull the flag before his putt. When he did so, Drear’s original shot popped out of the hole.
“Pretty amazing stuff,” Sybert said. “That was a first for me, seeing a shot like that one.”
It was also Drear’s first-ever hole-in-one and double eagle (or albatross). Drear, 61, has been golfing for 35 years.
“I’ve come within three or four inches of a hole-in-one on par-3 holes four or five times,” Drear said. “I just couldn’t get one to fall.”
Sybert and Drear — who have a business client relationship — get together f r golf two or three times a year.
“This is one golf outing with him I’ll definitely remember,” Drear said.
