Mason Martin’s cranial surgery planned, postponed

Injured Karns City Gremlins quarterback Mason Martin was scheduled for surgery Thursday morning, Oct. 12, to have his cranial flap put back in place, but conditions weren’t perfect so the procedure was delayed.

Mason’s father, Denny Martin, posted an update about his son Thursday morning, saying the surgery could have been thwarted by infection. In the evening, Martin said his son’s doctor wanted to wait for a better opportunity to reinsert Mason’s cranial flap.

“The plan for now is that we just wait until some time next week and try again,” Martin said.

In his post, Martin said the success of the surgery could help Mason’s brain begin to function in a normal manner. He also asked for people to continue praying for Mason, who was scheduled to be transferred Tuesday from UPMC Presbyterian Hospital to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh to begin rehabilitation. That plan was delayed until at least next week.

Martin also asked that people keep his wife, Stacy Martin, in their thoughts and prayers, before signing off with Mason’s favorite Bible verse, “Jeremiah 29:11.”

“Please also say a prayer of gratitude for those who are looking after and caring for Stacy during this time,” Martin said in the post. “She is so blessed to have family and friends who are willing to dig in and face the pain during this difficult time.”

This story was updated at 10:52 p.m. Oct. 13, 2023 to reflect that Mason Martin remains at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. A previous version of this story said he had been transferred to UPMC Mercy.
