BUTLER TWP — Five Connoquenessing Township Elementary School students took the top prize in their grades in the township’s fire safety poster contest Monday evening, Oct. 16, and the school also earned the traveling trophy for its high participation.

The township has a fire safety poster contest every October for Fire Prevention Week, where students at Northwest, McQuistion and Connoquenessing elementary schools create posters promoting fire safety.

Township emergency services director Scott Frederick said Monday he has spoken about fire safety at some of the area schools in recent days and has a few more talks planned this week.

The theme for this year’s poster contest was “cooking safety starts with you.” The contest was for children in kindergarten through fifth grade at three elementary schools. Township administrators chose a first-place poster from each grade level.

The winners chosen Monday were: kindergartner Braelyn O'Leary, first-grader Blaine Farnworth, second-grader Sophia Gibson, third-grader Brianna O'Leary and fourth-grader Collins Kramer, all of Connoquenessing Elementary, and fifth-grader Jenavieve Ward, of Northwest Elementary.

The students’ posters will remain on display in the township municipal building through at least the end of the month.

Popeye’s development

Zarnick said the developers of a Popeye chicken restaurant franchise in Alameda Plaza recently applied for permits, so work should begin soon.

“They have decided to have less seating and focus more on the takeout elements, which is what most restaurants are doing,” Zarnick said. “You’ll see it moving forward soon.”

Vehicle sales

Township commissioners voted Monday to advertise the sale of excess vehicles, including two pickup trucks used in the public works department, and two police vehicles. The vehicles are on display at the municipal building, according to commissioner chairman Dave Zarnick.

“Most of the replacements have arrived, there is a delay on one,“ said township manager Tom Knights.
