Former nurse accused of taking patients’ drugs at Saxonburg nursing home

A former nurse is accused of taking medication meant for her patients at a skilled nursing home in Saxonburg, according to borough police.

Documents showed Teresa L. James, 63, of Gibsonia, Allegheny County, was charged with felony endangerment of a care-dependent person and misdemeanors theft, reckless endangerment and drug possession following a March incident at the Embassy of Saxonburg.

The Embassy of Saxonburg confirmed that James is no longer employed at the facility. The Eagle’s requests for further comment were not returned.

In September, Saxonburg police filed charges against Amy S. Freehling, 57, for a similar incident at the nursing home. Police said Freehling, of Saxonburg, was found unconscious with a fentanyl patch in her mouth Sept. 21 by her co-workers. She was charged with two counts of felony endangerment of a care-dependent person, misdemeanors reckless endangerment and theft and summary disorderly conduct following police response to the medical call.

The charges filed against James were in connection to a report of a nurse who appeared to be under the influence of narcotics on March 30. The nurse was later identified as James.

Nursing staff informed officers that medications normally administered to patients by James were missing, and some had been thrown away, documents showed.

Police said most of the missing drugs were benzodiazepines, and that James was found to have benzodiazepines in her system.

When interviewing James, police said she would frequently “nod off.” James told police she threw the medication away, but said she did not know why she did, according to documents.

Police said James disclosed she was not prescribed benzodiazepines. The affidavit stated she was asked not to return to the property.

James’ preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
