Two women were taken to a hospital after their sailboat capsized on Lake Arthur in Moraine State Park on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 22.

According to park manager Dustin Drew, the women were not injured but transported to Butler Memorial Hospital for concerns of hypothermia.

“I think what they related to rangers was that a strong gust of wind caught them off guard,” he said. “It’s not unusual for sailboats to get knocked over at times.”

According to dispatchers, the initial call for the water rescue in Worth Township came in at 12:32 p.m.

Drew said both women were wearing life jackets when the boat capsized and that the average water temperature Sunday was 60 degrees.

“You wouldn’t want to be in there long without the proper gear,” Drew said.

One woman swam to shore near Watts Bay, and the other stayed by the boat and was rescued by other sailors.

Park staff and another sailboat assisted with placing the boat upright and towing it to shore.

Drew said traditional boating season is between April and October.

Portersville-Muddy Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department and its ambulance and Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team’s ambulance responded to the scene.
