‘Silent walk,’ celebration planned in memory 12-year-old who died in Winfield Township car crash

Zane Rupert

SAXONBURG — Borough council is hoping to turn grieving into celebration Saturday, Oct. 28, when it hosts “Zane’s Day” in honor of Zane Rupert, who died earlier this month in a vehicle accident.

Zane, 12, died along with his grandfather, David Faulx, on Oct. 13 when the Jeep Wrangler that Faulx was driving was involved in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer in Winfield Township.

Plans for Zane’s Day were discussed at the monthly Saxonburg council meeting Oct. 17 and made public through social media.

The event will feature a “silent walk” in Zane’s memory at 12:45 p.m., which will start at the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company’s carnival grounds, continue along Main Street to the Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church and then travel back to the carnival grounds. There will be an opportunity to stop and pray at the church.

Organizers say they have secured the use of the fire company grounds for that day, free of charge, and this was confirmed by fire Chief Christopher Dean. Gates open at noon.

At the conclusion of the walk, the event will shift to a “celebration” of Zane at the carnival grounds. This portion of the day will include live music from local bands/musicians and an open stage to share fond memories of Zane.

The celebration is expected to feature numerous vendors, a basket raffle and 50/50 raffle with the proceeds going to assist the Rupert family.

Food and drink vendors will be available on site.

No roads will be closed for the event, and all parking will be at the fire company grounds.

Organizers suggest, but do not require, a $5 donation to the Rupert family from each person who attends the event.
