Butler man accused of child endangerment

A Butler man was charged with felonies after police said four children under the age of 10 were found in deplorable conditions in a city home.

Leighton O. Thorpe, 32, was charged with four counts of child endangerment Wednesday, Oct. 25, after officers responded to reports of a 4-year-old child wandering barefoot on a city street.

Documents showed the child took the officer to where he was staying, which was where Thorpe was discovered.

There were three other children in the home, between the ages of 8 months and 6 years old, police said. The home had copious amounts of flies, clutter and no sheets or blankets on the beds, according to the affidavit.

Three children were found sleeping in one bed on the floor, and there were no preventative measures in place to keep the children from leaving the home, police said.

Butler County Children & Youth Services responded to the home with police, documents showed.

Thorpe’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
