Tickets are super expensive

If you didn’t win the Pittsburgh Steelers season ticket holder lottery, you’ll pay dearly for Super Bowl XLV seats.

The least expensive ticket found Monday in a Web search was $1,768. Another seller’s prices begin at $2,625 — with a limited or obstructed view. A third has prices running from $2,842 to $16,809 per seat.

The Steelers play the Green Bay Packers in Dallas on Feb. 6 for the NFL title.

Although some travel agents said many customers were turned off by the ticket prices, that isn’t the case for airline charter sales.

At Airquest Aviation at the Butler County Airport, the two turboprop planes and one jet plane it has that are capable of the trip were rented early Monday, manager Jerry Kennihan said.

Three jets from the Pittsburgh Jet Center in Zelienople also are booked, said Clayton Pegher, the director of charter services.

One jet is going to Dallas and returning on Super Bowl Sunday after the game, and two others are leaving the morning of Feb. 5, and returning Feb. 7.

Their customers already have their tickets, Pegher said.

Charter jets cost $20,000 to $25,000 for eight people, Pegher said, but prices depend on the flight plan and how many days the trip runs.

At Mars Travel, private jets are available for $12,000 to $15,000, said owner Jim Lascher.

Although he hadn’t chartered any jets, he sold five Super Bowl packages Monday.

Packages without airfare begin at $4,200 per person and include reserved bleacher seats in the upper end zone, a benchwarmer souvenir, three nights lodging, travel to and from the game, a pre-game dinner buffet and admission to the NFL Experience, a pro-football interactive theme park which will be the largest ever presented.

“The price increases with a better hotel,” Lascher said.

Upper end packages run $10,000 per person, he said.

At Travel Touch in Mars, those end zone bleacher seats are $2,475 per person, Arleen Gaydos, travel agent, said.

Packages generally don’t include seats and run about $1,569 per person for airfare and three nights lodging.

“The packages aren’t bad,” Gaydos said. “We’re encouraging people to get other seats.”

Delta Air Lines offers one flight each day from Pittsburgh to Dallas on Feb. 4 and 5, and a single nonstop return flight to Pittsburgh on Feb. 7.

The airline usually doesn’t offer direct, nonstop flights between the cities.
