Voters can prepare for polls, know rights

With election day right around the corner, secretary of the commonwealth Al Schmidt encourages voters to educate themselves prior to voting in person Tuesday.

Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.

“Pennsylvania voters can find a wealth of information about their rights at vote.pa.gov,” Schmidt said. “Every voter should be well informed about how to exercise their right to vote.”

A Friday news release reminded first-time voters and those voting for the first time in a new precinct that they must show identification. First-time voters who do not bring ID to the polls may return with it or must be offered a provisional ballot. (Persons returning to polls where they have voted previously do not need ID.)

Additionally, voters who applied for and received a mail ballot and then decide they want to vote at the polls must bring in their mail ballot, including the outer return envelope, with them to be voided.

Voters have the right to refuse assistance, and they have the right to vote without being subjected to intimidation, harassment or discriminatory conduct.
