Voters choose Hicks for 2 seats on Slippery Rock council
Republican candidate and incumbent John K. Hicks was elected to both a four-year seat and a two-year seat on Slippery Rock Borough Council on Tuesday, Nov. 7, according to unofficial election results.
Hicks joined Jennifer Ravert, who appeared on both the Republican and Democratic ballot, and Republican candidates Lauren A. Christmann and Ron Steele in securing four-year terms, the unofficial results indicated.
Christmann and Steele are both incumbents. Ravert earned a seat on the board for the first time.
Among the seven candidates competing for four four-year seats, Ravert led the way with 329 votes, or 16.05% of the vote; followed by Hicks with 318 votes, or 15.51% of the vote; Steele with 301 votes, or 14.68% of the vote, and Christmann with 299 votes, or 14.59% of the vote.
Those not earning a four-year seat on the board include Democratic candidates Ian Oman, Jonathan Foust and Bob Bowser. Oman, a newcomer, received 277 votes, or 13.51% of the vote; Foust received 260 votes, or 12.68% of the vote; and Bowser received 253 votes, or 12.34% of the vote.
In an earlier interview, Hicks said if he were elected to both seats, he would accept the four-year term over the two-year term. Second in that race is Oman.
Hicks received the most votes for the two-year seat with 323 votes, or 53.65% of the vote.
Oman received 276 votes, or 45.85% of the vote for the two-year term.
Christmann said she had been at the polls since 7 a.m. and was pleased with the voter turnout. Christmann has served on council for four years, and said she was excited to continue serving the Slippery Rock community and helping keep the community safe in her role as councilwoman. Christmann, a graduate of Slippery Rock Area School District, also said she would like to see more unity on council.
Ravert, who served as a member of the Slippery Rock Planning Commission, also spent the day at the polls.
As an elected council member, Ravert said she appreciates the support she received from borough residents and is excited about the opportunity to serve the community.
Hicks and Steele could not be reached for comment.
