Personal information breached in data security incident, county says

Personal data was breached in a recent data security incident, the Butler County Commissioners Office said in a statement on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

In October, federal authorities alerted the county to suspicious activity involving its computer network. Later that month, the county determined there had been unauthorized access to personally identifiable information maintained on the county’s network, the statement read. The information was primarily related to criminal court proceedings.

According to the news release, the county has notified local and federal law enforcement and continues to cooperate with federal law enforcement’s investigation. The county will continue to review impacted data and will provide written notice to people affected by the breach.

The county is making changes to strengthen its network against any future incidents.

Those potentially impacted should take steps to protect their personal information by monitoring financial accounts and credit reports and reporting any unusual activity to law enforcement.

“The security and integrity of our information systems are top priorities, and we work continually to safeguard our network to maintain confidentiality,” stated county IT director Jim Venturini. “The county will continue to invest in the internal processes, tools, and resources to reduce the likelihood of future security incidents.”
