Driver still sought, charged with vehicle theft in Jefferson Township hit-and-run
The stolen vehicle involved in a hit-and-crash Monday in Jefferson Township was located Tuesday, Nov. 28, but the driver who fled the scene is still being sought by state police.
According to Trooper Bertha Cazy, public information officer for Troop D, police are still looking for Donovan M. Philpot, 21, who was charged Tuesday with felony theft, misdemeanor accidents involving property damage, and summaries driving without a license and driving with a suspended license.
According to charging documents, Philpot was driving a white 2015 Buick Verano when he rear-ended another vehicle as it approached a stop sign on Bonniebrook Road at its intersection with Great Belt Road. The crash occurred around 8 a.m., police said, and Philpot’s Buick pushed the other vehicle off the roadway.
Police said Philpot told the other driver that he only had the sales paperwork for the vehicle, as it was purchased two days before. Philpot then fled the scene, but documents showed the other driver obtained a picture of the Buick’s license plate.
Officers interviewed the person on the vehicle registration, and that person said the vehicle was purchased for one of Philpot’s relatives, documents showed.
The vehicle was reported missing by one of Philpot’s relatives around 7 a.m. Monday, police said.
Police said Philpot was not permitted to operate the vehicle, as his license was suspended “due to truancy.”
Philpot is described as a Black male standing 6 feet tall and clean-shaven, according to Cazy. She added that he was last seen wearing a zip-up hoodie with a Jamaican flag on it.
Anyone with information about the Buick or Philpot is asked to contact state police by calling 724-284-8100.
