Garnet Mae Doerr-Stahlman (nee McCandless), 98, of Slippery Rock, passed away on Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at Orchard Manor skilled care facility, in Grove City.

Garnet was born in Butler, to Elsie E. Fox-McCandless and Donald K. McCandless, on Sept. 12, 1925. She graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1943. She married Richard Leroy Doerr on April 26, 1945.

As a beloved wife and mother, she was a lifelong member of the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church, where she was active in the choir and Methodist Women, and she served as Sunday school teacher/treasurer for the Sunday school. She worked at Slippery Rock University until her retirement in 1985.

Following retirement, she enjoyed babysitting for several families in the area. She participated in the Institute for Learning in Retirement and enjoyed visiting with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed foreign travel.

Garnet is survived by her children, Robert W. (Lynn) Doerr, Sharon G. Doerr and Terry L. Doerr, of Slippery Rock, and Mark R. Doerr, of Concordia, Cabot; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Garnet was preceded in death by her parents; Richard LeRoy Doerr, her husband of 40 years; Joseph E. Stahlman, her husband in later life; sisters, Erla J. Gouldsberry of Lisbon, Ohio, and Colleen K. Painter of Girard, Ohio; and son, Frederick M. Doerr of Slippery Rock.

DOERR-STAHLMAN — Friends of Garnet Mae Doerr-Stahlman, who died Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, may visit the family from 11 a.m. until the time of service at noon Friday at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Susan Moudry, pastor of Slippery Rock United Methodist Church, presiding.

Interment will follow at Slippery Rock Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American Kidney Fund at kidneyfund.org/donate or PKD Foundation (Polycystic Kidney Disease) at pkdcure.org.
