ZELIENOPLE — Work toward making accessibility improvements at the amphitheater in Community Park could begin in the spring.

At Zelienople borough council’s meeting Monday, Nov. 27, council president Mary Hess said she is hopeful that there will be a bid on the amphitheater project by the end of the year or at the beginning of next year, allowing for work to begin as soon as the snow melts away.

According to Hess, park manager Lyndsey Granata has been putting in the work to update and repair the park’s amphitheater and create fall and winter programming.

In spring 2023, council received grant money to repair the park’s amphitheater and make the area compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act by adding paved walkways and additional parking.

“She’s done a very good job with social media and getting out there and promoting,” Hess said. “Great things are happening at the park.”

Outside of the grant, funds are being sought for the project, too.

“They have been raising the funds and they are working to get that done in the spring (of 2024),” Hess said.

Events ahead

During Monday's meeting, borough council approved the closure of East New Castle Street, between East High Street and Main Street, for Miracle on Main from 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7.

According to Joel Grobe, Zelienople Area Business Association president, this area will be blocked off during a stuff-a-truck event with the Harmony Fire District Auxiliary.

For this year’s stuff-a-truck event, the auxiliary will be collecting items for local nursing homes. Items for collection include toiletries, blankets, slippers, socks, puzzles, word searches and snacks, like cookies and candy.

Later this month, a Holiday Pop-Up Bar is planned at the Strand Theater on Main Street from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28. All proceeds will be split between the theater and the Zelienople Area Public Library.
