Delays in receiving a custom door for the post office on Main Street in Butler have led some post office workers to don jackets while working at the front desk in the building.

The double doors and their hinges on the Main Street side of the building were damaged over the summer, and they couldn’t easily be opened and closed, Celeste Phillips, delivery supervisor at the post office, said in August. The office had to contract out the building of a new door because it is a specific make, according to Kelli Kemp, a supervisor at the post office.

“We’re still waiting for the door to come in,” Kemp said. “I think there have been a few congressional complaints over it.”

One of the doors at the entrance is being held open during the day with a cord strapped to a bar, allowing people to enter the building from the Main Street side. It is closed and locked when the retail section of the office isn’t in service. The door normally is always unlocked so people can access their post office boxes at any time.

One of the doors being closed for now could block certain mobility equipment from getting into the building, but the clerks can help someone enter the building if they call the office when they arrive. The phone number is 724-214-6116.

A spokesman from the office of U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16th, said the issue has been brought to the congressman’s attention.

“Since this summer, our staff has been working closely with constituents who are rightfully concerned about access to the Butler post office, also known as the Andrew Gomer Williams Post Office,” said Matthew Knoedler, a spokesman for Kelly’s office. “We are continuing to work closely with constituents who receive their mail at this location and with officials at the U.S. Postal Service to resolve this problem as quickly as possible.”
