New artificial Christmas tree to be installed in Diamond Park on Saturday

Passersby on Saturday, Dec. 9 will be able to see a new Christmas tree display in Diamond Park, according to Jeff Geibel, president of the Butler AM Rotary Club and former president of Butler Downtown.

The tree replaces a 25-foot evergreen that snapped last week. It will be installed sometime Saturday afternoon, Geibel said — just in time for a walk along and movie screening of “The Polar Express” at the Diamond Park and Grace Wellness Center.

“As the sun goes down and the kids come to town for Christmas, they’ll have a tree,” Geibel said.

The base, constructed of bare steel, was welded Friday by Butler Steel Supply, Geibel said. It will hold a pole in place around which cool blue string lights will hang, illuminating the park.

Geibel said presents will sit around the tree for decoration and to prevent tripping hazards.

He approximated the previous Christmas tree that stood in Diamond Park to be about 1,000 pounds. Each year, the trees, given to Butler Downtown “by a generous donor,” grew larger, he said.

“That is difficult to wrestle in Diamond Park,” Geibel said.

“This is going to be easier for volunteers, will be safer and will be more sustainable,” he said. “We won’t have to saw down a tree — and I think it’ll look nice.”
