Man charged with burglarizing Penn Township home

A man burglarized a Penn Township home Monday, Dec. 11, while suspected to be under the influence of narcotics, according to charges filed Tuesday.

Shawn M. Spithaler, 37, of Renfrew, was charged with felonies burglary and criminal trespass after police said a homeowner on Old Plank Road reported seeing someone in his house.

The homeowner said he was not home, but saw an unknown male in his home via surveillance cameras after 9 p.m. Monday, documents showed.

Responding police said they found the front door and door frame had been significantly damaged.

The investigating officer wrote in the affidavit that a shirtless male was observed standing still in the corner of the basement as police investigated. The man was ordered to the ground several times and eventually taken into custody, documents showed.

The man was later identified as Spithaler, who police said had difficulty speaking and was nonsensical. The investigating officer indicated it was possible Spithaler was under the influence of meth.

Several capped needles were found on Spithaler during a pat down, police said.

Police said the homeowner confirmed he did not know Spithaler.

Spithalter is in Butler County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 20 before District Judge Sue Haggerty.
