Police responding to burglary kill a man authorities say was armed with machete
SHENANDOAH, Pa. — Police responding to a reported burglary at a southeastern Pennsylvania home shot and killed a man who authorities say lunged at them with a machete.
Shenandoah and Mahanoy City police had responded to the home in Shenandoah around 12:30 a.m. Monday, state police said. The property owner had video surveillance in the home because it's vacant, and the owner reported seeing someone in the house who was wearing a mask and had a big knife.
The officers soon found Byron Scheuring, 32, of Shenandoah, under a bed in an upstairs bedroom. After Scheuring refused to comply with several verbal orders to surrender, the officers moved the bed and Scheuring lunged at them with a machete, state police said. A Shenandoah officer then fired one shot that hit Scheuring, who was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
The names of the responding officers have not been released. No officers were injured in the confrontation.
State police say the matter remains under investigation.
