Teen accused of firing shots at burglar from balcony, police said

A 19-year-old was charged with reckless endangerment after state police said he fired a rifle from a balcony at a man who robbed his home.

Bryce D. Houston, of Chicora, is the fourth person to face charges in connection with a burglary that occurred at his home in Fairview Township on June 4.

Documents indicate a group conspired to take Houston’s PlayStation 5 that night, including Aiden McKinley, 19, Ansley Lauer, 18, and Brady Ealy, 20.

According to police, Houston reported he was using his PlayStation 5 around 4 a.m. June 4 when McKinley and Ealy entered his home. Documents showed McKinley approached Houston from behind and struck him in the face four times.

Houston then shoved McKinley in self-defense, police said, and McKinley left the residence with the PlayStation.

Houston told police he retrieved his AR-15 rifle from behind his couch and fired at McKinley from his balcony, document showed.

There was no scope on the rifle, police said, and Houston reported firing the gun from 10 to 15 yards away, aiming for McKinley, “just to scare him.”

McKinley told police in an interview that he and Ealy had been shot at while fleeing the residence, documents showed. Police said Lauer, who was in a parked vehicle close to the residence, also heard shots fired.

The firearm was loaded with Winchester Green-Tip rounds. According to police, five spent casings were collected from outside the residence.

Houston was charged Nov. 16 with three counts of misdemeanor reckless endangerment. His preliminary hearing on these charges is scheduled Jan. 2 before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.

Ealy and Lauer waived their right to preliminary hearings on the charges in September. McKinley’s preliminary hearing was held in June, and all charges were held for court. All of the cases advanced to the Butler County Court of Common Pleas.
