Ruth A. Johnston, 98, of Passavant Retirement Community, Zelienople, formerly of Gibsonia, passed away on Tuesday morning, Dec. 12, 2023, at the community.

Born in Bakerstown, Pa., on July 24, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Cameron and Elodia Lucas Gray.

Ruth had worked in the cafeteria for the Mars Area School District for many years. She had been involved in the Mars Community Recreation Association and the Mars PTA.

She was a former member of the Mars United Methodist Church, and was most recently attending worship at Passavant Retirement Community. She had volunteered at Passavant for many years.

She was a member of the Mars Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Mars Women’s Club.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Doman and her husband, Jack, of Pittsburgh; four sons, Richard Johnston of Butler, William Johnston and his wife, Wendy, of Valencia, Dwight Johnston of Butler and Joseph Johnston (the late Dottie) of Renfrew; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd L. Johnston, whom she married on June 12, 1943, and who died on Sept. 14, 2010; and by a brother, Wayne Gray, who was killed in action during World War II.

JOHNSTON — Friends of Ruth A. Johnston, who died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at MCDONALD-AEBERLI FUNERAL HOME, 238 Crowe Ave. Mars. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Freda Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Mars Cemetery, Adams Township, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
