Santa’s reindeer cleared to make present deliveries on Christmas Eve

Santa Claus and his reindeer are approved to travel through the United States between the hours of 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, and 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 25, local time, through or over any U.S. border port.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service issued a transit permit to Mr. S. Nicholas Claus of the North Pole, a distributor with Gifts and Good Cheer, Inc.

“USDA is delighted to grant Mr. Claus and his reindeer a special permit to enter the United States, ensuring a seamless journey for the joy they bring each holiday season,” said Jenny Lester Moffitt, undersecretary for marketing and regulatory programs in a Thursday news release. “We extend a warm welcome to Mr. Claus and recognize the vital role of U.S. milk and cookies in fueling his festive flight.”

Veterinary officials ensured the reindeer met all entry requirements before issuing the permit.

“At a recent inspection, the reindeer were found to be healthy and able to prance and paw with each hoof,” Dr. Rosemary Sifford, USDA’s chief veterinary officer said.

It was noted on the health certificate that one reindeer, Rudolph, has a minor physical anomaly. However, APHIS indicated that Rudolph’s red nose, while bright, was normal for him and not a concern.

The reindeer also received a clean bill of health after a review by Pennsylvania state veterinarian Dr. Alex Hamberg and Agricultural Secretary Russell Redding.

“Despite Rudolph’s shiny red nose and the team’s mysterious ability to fly, our veterinary experts have declared Santa’s reindeer healthy for their important holiday task,” Redding said.

With positive feedback from Redding and Hamberg, the reindeer were approved to fly from rooftop to rooftop across all 67 Pennsylvania counties by Gov. Josh Shapiro.

“This magical time of year brings lightness and cheer to every Pennsylvanian — no matter what holidays you celebrate,” Shapiro said. “I know I love the holiday season and how it brings people together. This is a time for family, for generosity, for finding a bit of light — also a time to remember folks like our state vets who serve our communities every day and help ensure Santa can make it safely to every community in PA.”
