3 fire departments investigate chimney in Butler, find no fire
Firefighters investigated a report of a chimney fire at 206 W. Pearl St. in Butler on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 2, but found no fire.
Butler Bureau of Fire chief Chris Switala said the smoke reported by a resident of the house at around 4:15 p.m. was actually steam generated by a heating device in the building. He said there was no danger in the house and the residents were able to return inside after emergency workers cleared the scene.
In addition to the bureau, Butler Township Volunteer Fire District, VA Butler Fire and Emergency Services and Butler police responded to the scene. During the incident, the street was blocked by fire trucks as crews investigated the call, but it was cleared by a little after 5 p.m.
Fire personnel from Adams Area Fire District and Cranberry Township have said previously people who use fireplaces in their homes should make sure to keep their chimneys clean and clear, while also keeping track of their smoke detector batteries in the winter.
Everyone should also keep their carbon monoxide detectors powered, because clogged or blocked furnace filters can lead to carbon monoxide buildup in houses, firefighters said.
