Police: Pittsburgh man leads chase in Adams Township, steals vehicle on New Year’s Eve
A Pittsburgh man led Adams Township police in a lengthy pursuit New Year’s Eve that resulted in a crash and continued after he stole another vehicle, according to charges filed Sunday, Dec. 31.
Police said Daniel A. Fountain, 20, crashed his vehicle in a retention pond in a Valencia neighborhood, fled the scene on foot, and stole another person’s vehicle as they arrived home.
Fountain was charged with three counts of felony robbery, two felony counts of fleeing police, one count of felony theft, misdemeanors evading arrest and drug possession, and several traffic citations.
The chase began just after 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, when a township officer was traveling behind Fountain’s black Chevrolet SUV on Myoma Road. Police said they observed Fountain fail to signal turns and yield to stop signs.
Fountain also failed to yield to the lights and sirens signaling a traffic stop, and a chase ensued, according to police.
Documents showed Fountain traveled at a high rate of speed down Crider Road, Heritage Creek Drive and Route 228, weaving around other vehicles on the road.
Police said Fountain then took Three Degree Road into Valencia.
Documents showed Fountain’s vehicle eventually left the road, crashed through a fence, down a hill, and onto Delaware Avenue. The vehicle then proceeded through another yard, over another hillside and into a retention pond.
Fountain was seen exiting the vehicle and fleeing on foot, police said. Fountain did not comply with officer’s commands to stop, wading through the retention pond and into a nearby wooded area, charging documents show.
Police said they set up a perimeter to look for Fountain when an officer heard the sound of squealing tires coming from the 200 block of Timbercrest Trail.
A silver Hyundai sedan sped away from the scene, and police said a woman in a nearby driveway reported the vehicle was stolen from her.
According to police, the woman said she was traveling on Three Degree Road a few minutes before, and Fountain’s vehicle passed hers. She reported seeing the vehicle weaving through traffic.
The woman disclosed she also saw Fountain’s vehicle had crashed into the retention pond.
As she parked and exited her vehicle at a residence on Timbercrest Trail, police said the woman was approached by a man “breathing heavily.” The man was later identified as Fountain.
Documents showed Fountain sat in the driver’s seat of the Hyundai sedan, then exited it and approached her, attempting to rip the keys from her hands.
Police said the woman recalled Fountain saying, “Don’t make me hurt you,” before ripping the Hyundai key from her key ring and fleeing the scene.
Fountain continued south on Valencia Road, with police still in pursuit, until he came to the end of a cul-de-sac on Haymont Drive. Officers said Fountain then stopped and exited his vehicle with his hands in the air.
Fountain told officers the Chevrolet he was initially driving had been reported stolen at one time, and he fled police out of fear it was still listed “stolen.”
Documents showed a marijuana blunt and the remains of five other blunts were found in the Chevrolet after it was removed from the retention pond.
Fountain was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail. His preliminary hearing before District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz is scheduled Wednesday, Jan. 10.
